Hello everyone,
I am posting this via Annes origional, for obvious reasons.
Information given to me by The Ministry of Defence Air Historical Branch 3
(RAF) at Great Scotland Yard, London in respect of a grave headstone seen on
UK television series "Songs of Praise" televised on Sunday evenings.
This particular transmission came from the Lincolnshire village of Scampton
but in WW2 it boasted a very large RAF Bomber Command base nearby and a
number of air crew killed "on Ops" or in flying accidents from
R.A.F.Scampton are buried in the same church yard.
My query to the MOD (AHB) was concerning the information seen on the
headstone during the BBC transmission which featured that of Sgt
E.N.C.Catley.
The reply was as follows:- "on 29th September 1940 Sgt Catley was the pilot
of Hampden (a type of British bomber aircraft:- ed Tim C) P 3124 (serial
No of individual aircraft:- ed Tim C) from No 49 Sqn RAF Scampton. This
aircraft crashed as a result of a flying accident"
There is a full story there to be researched as most details as to what
happened are still held on record in the Sqn "Operational Records Book" held
in the PRO in Kew, through the Aircraft Accident Cards held at the RAF
Museum in Hendon and thirdly via the Records of Service from the RAF
Personnel Management Centre at Innsworth.
With our collective coverage of Cat*ley in general, I hope that it should
not be too difficult for one Catley Line to identify ENC Catley as "one of
theirs". If so, I can assist them to extract the details as to the history
surrounding this death, most of the information is not yet available via
Internet but no matter it can still be extracted ex Archives. I know because
I have researched two of my cousins who were both killed in the RAF in WW2.
So, if anybody has legitimate claim to Sgt ENC Catley and wants his story, I
can help. One thing:- if you wish to access the Innsworth Records you have
to prove to be "next of kin".
Anybody interested, let me know if you will
Regards Tim C

I have found Catleys on "The Commonwealth War Graves
Commission" site.
I found this site just by chance on a wet day in New Zealand
