Hi Erica et al,
I have in my posession a photostat copy of a hand written book by James
Richard Cattley at the age of 13 years when he journeyed out from the Port
of Hull to St Petersburg in Russia in 1819 to join his elder brother Robert
Cattley who was out there running the Family business.
It is an interesting account seen through the eyes of a 13 year old and says
much for his education at the family seat being in York, the County Town of
the English County of Yorkshire.
It is written in good copperplate pen and ink and has illustrations of
Russian people that he saw there.
I reproduce here for you the first page:-
Cattleys
Voyage
We set sail on the 2nd June 1819 for St Petersburg on board the Alexander,
Capt W.Bunney, we had a fine westerly Breeze.
about1/4 past 3 in the afternoon lost sight of Hull; we arrived at Elsinore
in 9 days during the time we had very fine weather which was rendered doubly
pleasing by very agreeable company (consisting of) Miss M Westley and her
two brothers Charles and Stephen and a servant.
On the 9th day as I said before, we arrived at Elsinore about 1/2 past 2 in
the Afternoon Stephen and I went on shore and were introduced to a Mr Brown
who was very attentive to us and sent one of his clarks with us to Hamlets
Garden which we were very anxious to see. I cannot say much for their
gardening; they dig a large hole in the earth a foot deep and 20 yards in
Circumference (as near as I can guess) and in it raise a bed leaving room
for a walk
The text goes on to reveal that at this point they had stopped off in
Denmark en route for the Baltic and that despite the "fine westerly breeze
and fine weather" the Alexander was probably one of those Baltic trading
Brigs a slow and clumbersome tub of a vessel and certainly not "a fast
packet ship".
The book itself is only some 15cms X 10cms and is in the posession of John
Steeds a collateral female line member of our Cattley Tree.
If any members of our mutual Tree want a copy of it, let me know with snail
mail address if I do not already know it and I will comply.
Regards to all Tim
