Hi Liz,
Hows the Newington area Catley searches going?
Thanks for the input on FNC Catley and it looks pretty certain from
comparing your info with that from The Commonwealth War Graves Commission
web pages that we have one and the same person because everything seems to
"fit", ie the name and other initials plus his age, and date of death ...
you quote 4th 1/4 1940 which fits in nicely with the CWGC info ie death was
21st September 1940.
However, the place of death registration throws up an interesting query.
Your info indicates Lower Agbrigg, this I conclude must refer to a place now
not on many maps being an area south of Dewsbury in the East Riding of
Yorkshire.
We know from the MOD that he was killed in a flying accident and from his
grave, that he was buried adjacent to his RAF Squadrons base (Scampton) yet
if his death was certified at Lower Agbrigg, this is a long way away (in UK
terms) from his base.
A flying accident suggests that he was not killed "on Ops" and that it was a
training exercise instead and so he could have easily been on flying
training from his Lincolnshire base and crashed in East Yorkshire. But, if
that is the case, why return his body to Scampton for burial and not to his
next of kin wherever they might have resided (he was RAFVR thus English)?
It was standard procedure in WW2 for RAF aircrew killed for a member
officer of that Sqn to accompany the coffins transport back to and into
receipt of the next of kin for private burial, yet in this case FNC Catley
was buried at his base.
Without your Agbrigg info, the supposition would have to be that he was
killed in a flying accident close to his base (as many were, on take offs
and landings) and that his NOK were happy with him being buried there and
indeed the RAF recovery Unit and local authorities would have probably have
returned the body back to his base first before arranging transfer to his
home town or village.
Thus the Agbrigg inclusion is an extra factor that interests me. I did say
in my previous e-mail that there is some history to be resolved here and
that was before your welcome input into the situation which further
compounds my thoughts in this direction.
If Frederick N. C. Catley was one of my pedigree, I would certainly want to
access the Archives and clear the true history as it can be reasonably
easily done. I am half tempted to do so anyway out of my interest in things
aviation in WW2 but will refrain unless I get a positive response from a.n
other who can indicate to me that Frederick is a member of their Tree?
Any takers?
Regards, ................ Tim
