Many thanks Anthony - I think that resolves things nicely for his absence in
the census returns for 1851 and probably 1871 as well.

The one with DOB is Joseph Longbottom Catley and the entry, from 31 March
1851, states he first went to sea in 1851. The other entry is from a list of
names and less informative. Both are in the date range 1845-54. Anthony

If anyone holds a subscription for ‘Findmypast.co.uk’ I would appreciate a
specific look-up please.
I am interested in a Joseph (Longbottom) Catley alias Cattley who was born
in 1836 at Scarborough, YKS, the son of James Catley & Jane Longbottom.
I have been unable to locate him in the 1851 and 1871 census.
I believe he may well have been ‘at sea’ when the above returns were taken
given his stated occupation of ‘sailor’ in the 1861 census.
The following references appear on the free index for Merchant Navy Seamen
at Findmypast.

I would like to know if any of the transcripts for the above records cover
the periods when the 1851 & 18171 census were taken.
