Following this lead there is a Benjamin Alfred Eatley, who married twice. In 1871 he was
aged 21 and a bricklayer and in 1886 aged 35 and a builder. In both his father is Benjamin
Eatley, builder. (Ancestry has the second entry as Easley but the groom's signature
clearly has a crossed T). There are also 1850 baptisms at Chelsea for Benjamin Alfred
Eatley and sister Mary (the latter born 1844). National Archives has an entry for Eatley
Buildings in Chelsea, now demolished, believed built by Benjamin Eatly or Eatley
(1795-1859). Well done Pat. It is clear we are dealing with a spurious Catley. Anthony

Could this be the family that appear in
ancestry.com in the 1881 census as EATLY
Name: Benj. Eatly
Spouse: Sophia Eatly
Birth: abt 1830 - (Bs), France
Residence: 1881 - St Lakes, London, England
There is also an 1871 census entry for EASLY
Name: Benjamin Easly
[Benjamin Eatly [Ball]]
Spouse: Sophia Easly
Birth: abt 1830 - France
Residence: 1871 - Chelsea , London, England

How Do All,
Am steadily working my way through the Census returns and trying to append each entry to
its rightful Cat*ley tree and where no match is known against the 40+ trees I have listed,
am making notes accordingly with the intention of returning later.
If I attempted to search out every query as I come across them, the exercise would take
forever and a day and so, in the main, have resisted the temptation but there is one
interesting one which I think merits mention in the hope that someone knows something
about the persons concerned or, if not, has the curiousity to do a bit of research ?
1851 Census shows a 21 year old Benjamin Catly / Catley born in France (British Subject)
a bricklayer with his wife Sophia and 8 month old son Benjamin Alfred. Both Sophia and
Benjamin2 born Chelsea.
1861 Census shows an Eliza Catley age 58, a widow residing at Jubilee Place, Chelsea
together with bricklayer son Benjamin (born France, British Subject) now estimated as age
32 plus daughters Mary age 20 and Emma age 18 both born Chelsea.
No mention of Eliza's husband and Sophia + Benjamin2 missing in 1861.
What is the story behind this I wonder? Was Eliza's husband also a bricklayer and
working in France circa 1830 perhaps?
There are few Catley connections with France that I know of...........there was a Stevan
of Normanton Cattley tree member managing a lace making factory in Calais but the
Benjamin/Eliza instance is unconnected I think.
Any takers?
Regards
Tim
