That's a good tip Pat, will remember it for future use.

I have had occasional success on
leaving out the surnames
entirely when searching. If you put in as much information as possible
such as first names, an approx date and place of birth, mother's first
name, father's first name and/or spouse, siblings first names etc ,
you can be lucky and find someone whose surname has been wrongly
transcribed. It helps if their first names are not too common of
course, otherwise you can get too many results.
Cheers

Could this be the family that appear in
ancestry.com in the 1881 census as
EATLY
Name: Benj. Eatly
Spouse: Sophia Eatly
Birth: abt 1830 - (Bs), France
Residence: 1881 - St Lakes, London, England
There is also an 1871 census entry for EASLY
Name: Benjamin Easly
[Benjamin Eatly [Ball]]
Spouse: Sophia Easly
Birth: abt 1830 - France
Residence: 1871 - Chelsea , London, England

Following this lead there is a Benjamin Alfred Eatley, who married twice.
In 1871 he was aged 21 and a bricklayer and in 1886 aged 35 and a builder.
In both his father is Benjamin Eatley, builder. (Ancestry has the second
entry as Easley but the groom's signature clearly has a crossed T). There
are also 1850 baptisms at Chelsea for Benjamin Alfred Eatley and sister
Mary (the latter born 1844). National Archives has an entry for Eatley
Buildings in Chelsea, now demolished, believed built by Benjamin Eatly or
Eatley (1795-1859). Well done Pat. It is clear we are dealing with a
spurious Catley. Anthony

My sincere thank's to both Pat and Anthony for following up on my query re
the ' 51 & ' 61 census returns re Benjamin Catly/Catley and in the light
of information provided, Anthony's choice of the word spurious is most
fitting.
Well done Pat, I would never have thought to search under Eas or Eat, your
lateral thinking makes me realise that I will need to "up my game" when
the time comes for me to address my "unaccounted" list of Catley names
that are collecting as I complete each ten year set of census returns
under Catley/Cattley.
Am now half way through the 1861 census which so far has yielded some 22
queries (the 1851 census produced 47) and am wondering just how many of
these will eventually turn out to be invigilator or transfer errors?
Regards
Tim
