Attn:- James Catley of Barley tree researchers.
Good afternoon all,
It seems that I am having a military sort of Cat*ley tree research week, because following
on from yesterday's news re William Francis Catley and his WW2 history, I have had
today, news from The Commonwealth War Graves Commission concerning Edmund Cattley.
Edmund (Cattley) born GRO 3/4 1892 St Saviours bapt 07/08/1892 St Andrew's, Stoke
Newington, was the son of Edward (Catley) born Anstey (GRO 3/4 1850 Royston) and Sarah nee
Fisher. Edmund served in the Royal Field Artillery and suffered malaria and shell shock
and was invalided out of military service. After a year or so, he suffered a relapse and
landed up in Canehill Asylum for the Insane where he died in 1920.
As you may recall, self along with other researchers, have put the case to the CWGC that
Edmund and other such ex soldiers from WW1 who died in Asylums as a direct effect of their
mental state, should be recognised.
The CWGC inform me that Edmund and a number of other ex soldiers who died as patients at
Canehill were cremated and as such they will be commissioning a small memorial listing
each person by name within Croydon (Mitcham Road) Cemetery.
Regards
Tim
