Hello, everyone. I am researching the origins of my gg grandfather, Thomas
Cat(t)ley.
Thomas Catley (note the single 't') and Ann Banks married in 1823 in
Escrick, Yorkshire, a short distance from Riccall where they spent most of
the rest of their lives . Ann died in 1878 aged 93.
The children of Thomas & Ann were:
John Cattley (1825-1905), born in Thorganby, Yorkshire, but spent most of
his working life as an agricultural labourer in Riccall. He married Sarah
Walker (1825-1881) and they had at least 6 children, my paternal grandmother
being one.
My paternal grandmother was Ann Elizabeth Swinbank nee Cattley. She was born
in Riccall in 1856 and died in Lincoln in December 1944. Her brother Joseph
had 4 children, and one of them, Marjorie (Madge) became the assistant
registrar at Selby. Another brother, John, a joiner by trade, worked for the
firm of Cattley, Ernest in York.
Thomas & Ann had another child born in 1825 (possibly a twin sister for
John): Mary, who married Mark Rennison of Riccall at St Crux, York in 1843.
She died in 1902.
Thomas & Ann's youngest child was William (1827-1899) who married Fanny
Bickerdike of Bramham and had 3 children: Louis (1859), Herbert (1861), and
Irvine (1867). William was a blacksmith, later a railway engine fitter, and
latterly lived at 6 Buckingham Terrace York.
Any information as to the origins of Thomas Catley would be appreciated.
Regards to all.
