Subject: Rookwood Cemetery - William GULLEN
Hello all,
I am trying to find information about William GULLEN and his family for a
friend in England. William came to Aus as a convict in 1838 (transported for
10 years for stealing a hanky...). He did well for himself, became a butcher
and died at the age of 78 in Newtown in 1896. His death certificate says he
is buried at Rookwood Cemetery. His wife was Sarah Ann BAYLIS/S, known as
Ann. There are two deaths for Ann GULLEN in the NSW Index, one in 1880 in
Sydney aged 51; one in 1916 aged 82. The death cert doesn't specify whether
Ann was deceased when William died, so either of these may be her.
Would someone with access to Rookwood Cemetery records mind looking William
up? I don't know what sort of records they are (registers or MIs?) but I'm
hoping that Ann might be buried with him, and that might enable me to find
out something about her - I can't find a birth for her in NSW either, so I
know nothing but what's on the marriage certificate (precious little - no
ages, birthplaces or parents names!)
Many thanks - any help would be much appreciated,
Loretta in Melbourne.
PS. William and Ann had four surviving daughters - Matilda, Sarah Ida (m.
Edward T CATLEY), Elizabeth (m. Joseph McGRATH) and Stella (m. John GEARY).
