Hello Tim,
just a note to any interested listers regarding
Thomas Catley.
He arrived in NSW, Aus as a convict aboard the "Bengal Merchant"
in 1838. The ship's indent gives his age as 19 yrs which I presume his
age when he was tried and convicted in Somerset on October 26, 1837.
So from this info he was born in 1818 or 1817.
Thomas died in Parramatta, NSW, on August 8, 1901, age 82, which
gives a birthdate of 1819 or 1818. So therefore a birthdate of 1818 seems
most probable. His death cert gives his place of birth as Bath, England.
It gives his father's name also as Thomas.
Mothr's name is unknown and no siblings are recorded.
He married Janet Anderson in NSW on March 16, 1846. Janet was also
a convict and came from Scotland.
Anthony Catley
(Bernies Catley's cousin)

Subject: Re: [CAT...] Australian branch of Midsomer Norton Catley line.
Hello Dennis,
Good to hear from you again.
I think that I may have confused some by my last e-mail re Bernies work
where I indicated that there was a connection between Anstey and Midsomer
Norton, in Catley Tree terms.
I have taken my eye off the ball recently, mainly because there has been
little "input" via ROOTSWEB and in retrospect I think I was wrong by
suggesting a connection exists.
We now know that Anstey Catleys settled in Tisbury, Wiltshire which is not
that far from Somerset Norton but I do not think that anyone has yet
managed
to find a genealogical link between them? So, if I am correct in
this
deduction please ignore my previous comments.
All Bernie has given me concerning the connections, is that one Thomas
Catley of Midsomer Norton who had a son, also Thomas, married Janet
Anderson
(of Scotland) in 1846 and that their four children were all born in
Bathurst
N.S.W. between 1844 and 1849. The assumption therefore is that
Thomas 2
emigrated but if he married Janet here in the UK or in Australia, I do not
know.
As I indicated before, I will happily type Bernies info up onto an excel
spreadsheet in genealogical reference style in the next few days and will
send you it by attachment.
It covers the following four generations in Australia and brings this line
up to date.
I can fully sympathise with Bernie knowing that he has had a pretty tough
time attempting to gain this information by "cold writing" to addresses
gained from Telephone Directories etc. The response rate to this method of
research is not good and one really has to work very hard to entice people
who are not genealogically motivated to come up with the necessary
information to satisfy ones requirements.
I know, because before I knew better, I attempted to contact every Cattley
in the UK phone books thinking that all would be related quite closely but
obviously this was not the case as I came to realise quite quickly. Some
were very happy to assist me whereas others simply ignored my contact
letters. So in one way I got an immediate input of new information which
sent me scampering off down different research paths, only to find that
various "key persons" holding essential information to confirm a
particular
line would not communicate due to some family fude or other. All
most
frustrating!
So hats off to Bernie for getting the full update for the NSW branch of
the
Midsomer Norton Catleys sorted.
Regards
Tim
