Hello to you Anthony,
Thanks for the additional information.
I have noted that there have been quite a few requests for assistance from
yourself and Bernie to trace Thomas Catley back before his Transportation to
Australia.
It is a great pity that no other listers have yet discovered any connection
with Bath as a place of residence which might indicate a family connection
with him. The reasonable assumption could be that he is connected with
either the Somerset Norton or Tisbury Catleys due to proximity.
However, the discovery that Hertfordshire Catleys (Anstey) moved to Tisbury
in Wiltshire indicates that ancestors were much more mobile than we thought.
Thus by the same token, Catley arrivals in Bath could have come from
anywhere, London/Essex, Lincolnshire or Yorkshire; they being the other
known seats of Catley residence at the time. Thus we should keep an open
mind as to Bath origins.
Regards ......... Tim

Hello Tim,
just a note to any interested listers regarding
Thomas Catley.
He arrived in NSW, Aus as a convict aboard the "Bengal Merchant"
in 1838. The ship's indent gives his age as 19 yrs which I presume his
age when he was tried and convicted in Somerset on October 26, 1837.
So from this info he was born in 1818 or 1817.
Thomas died in Parramatta, NSW, on August 8, 1901, age 82, which
gives a birthdate of 1819 or 1818. So therefore a birthdate of 1818 seems
most probable. His death cert gives his place of birth as Bath, England.
It gives his father's name also as Thomas.
Mothr's name is unknown and no siblings are recorded.
He married Janet Anderson in NSW on March 16, 1846. Janet was also
a convict and came from Scotland.
Anthony Catley
(Bernies Catley's cousin)
