Hello Liz
Can not help you with the former ie Mary Catley b 7/8/1774 but with regard
to the latter, this certainly relates to William Cattley of Chipping
Barnet, Hertfordshire despite the spelling errors in the Directory for 1831.
This William belongs to my Tree and he is the best known Cattley on it, he
was born in 1787 and died in 1835. He was a business man with a town house
in Central London and his country house in Chipping Barnet. He was also a
keen amateur horticulturist and was responsible for the introduction of the
Orchid into Europe.
A President of The Royal Horticultural Society some years after Williams
death named a whole Genus (some 70+ species) including the one that William
inadvertently imported after Williams name in honour of his discovery ....
ie the genus Cattleya.
Should you wish to know more on the subject you will find that his orchid
discovery comes up again and again on the Internet, just type in Cattley and
you will see what I mean. However some of the information on a few of the
sites is not strictly accurate.
There was also a very interesting feature on William done in a 1993 (can
not remember which month) of the National Geographic Magazine.
