How do Mick,
I think you are quite right in swapping between hobby interests and
understand that you are taking a break on genealogy for the time being.
I swap between genealogy, amateur radio and WW2 aviation research myself.
That way I do not get stale, or rather, if I feel that one interest starts
to flag, I switch to one of the others instead.
Having said that, I have encountered a possibly unique situation whilst
researching my own tree of finding out about a 4th cousin of mine who was
killed whilst serving in RAF Coastal Command in WW2. His Squadron used the
very first form of airborne radar to attempt to locate German subs on the
sea surface out in the Atlantic in 1941.
You can therefore imagine my research interest here as it bought into play
ALL THREE of my subjects together!
It just goes to show that one does not have to necessarily chase back in
time very far, all that I have uncovered has not been researched before and
although only 60 years old, it is still history and obviously at a very
important point in time in World events. Even more so in that he and his
colleagues used this very basic form of radar to "home brew" a method
whereby they could use it to attempt a "blind approach" in fog or 100% cloud
over the airfield. At that time aircraft could only land IF the pilot could
see the runway. The adaption of this early form of radar at Squadron level
to solve the problem eventually resulted in the "blind approach" system
which is used by all civil and military aircraft today.
Noted that you will still continue to monitor rootsweb and I know that we
can count on your continued support as always.
Best wishes as always ......... Tim

G'day Tim,
Thank you for your message. I have taken a break from genealogy for a
while although I follow the Rootsweb list. I have been engaged in some
consultancies which are taking more time than I expected. I have a number
of "to do" things to follow up on and I hope to get around to these
within a couple of months.
