1710, stamp duty became payable on these agreements (which is why the
Inland Revenue started to record them - Yea! for the tax man).
PRO Kew holds records from IR
(40 volumes for London, and 30 for other country towns). They were called
'indentures' because two copies were written on the same sheet, and then
an indented line was drawn between the two and the paper was divided and
each party kept a copy.
No premium was paid when bound to a close relative; no stamp duty was
payable if the apprentice was a parish pauper (hence no record at IR)
Parentage rarely given after 1752.
