Hi Tim,
Now there is a nice little retirement task for you, to transcribe and
publish
all those letters of your russian rellies. That will keep you off the
streets.
Does the University OWN all those documents???
I havent had a chance to get back to the Library to keep searching the
Times on line, as we are moving at the moment.. however in a couple of
weeks I hope to have masses of time to get back into the family stuff.
Which has
been neglected of late.
That was a really old marriage that Dave found in 1549.. the spelling of the
name
as 'Cattleye' was interesting too.. I suppose that was the latin version.
I hope all you poms are enjoying a nice summer.. two good summers in a
row.. my goodness that proves global warming !!!!

Hello Bill (and Kay)
Thank you for posting your Catley information resource ex Times online, it
makes most interesting reading indeed and I was especially interested in
the
references to Devizes and Barry Dock because they show evidence of
West
Country and Welsh Catley "pockets".
As for the reference to James Catley (British vice Consul) Pernau, as part
of a delegation that made a presentation to the Tzar and Tzarina at a
reception in St Petersburg in 1895:- This is a mis-spelling on the Times'
part. The person concerned was in fact James Edward Cattley bapt St
Petersburg 1857 d Ealing (London) 1942.
He is one of my lot, ie Stevan Catlay of Normanton, Yorks married
Elizabeth
Jube 1609.
James Edward was one of the "Russian Cattleys" on my Tree who by either
luck
or good management (I know not which) retired back home to the UK in
1910
and thus missed the Russian Revolution of 1917. He built a big town house
in Corfton Road, Ealing and resided there until his death.
Interestingly enough none of his five children ever married but kept the
house on from 1942 until the last of them died in 1983.
The contents of the house concerning paperwork, photo albums, paintings
(all
the children were good artists) visas and letters are now in the
keeping
of
the Russian Languages Dept of Leeds Uni and give a good insite into
the
history and times of an English family living in Imperial Russia in the
latter part of the 19th cent.
Regards Tim Cattley
