Good Morning Elizabeth,
Thank you for your enquiry concerning your Joseph Catley who married
Elizabeth Burdett 09/02/1804 in Melbourn.
Your question would be best answered by a Rootsweb Catley Lister who, like
yourself, is a member of the "Joseph of Melbourn" family tree but in case
that does not happen, I am sending you an overview because I do not know how
far back you have trawled on the e-mails concerning the Joseph of Melbourn
tree and thus you may not have picked up on the dna testing that has been
done that includes Joseph's line?
The dna results show a close match between three Herts/Cambs/Essex Catley
trees as follows :-
James of Barley 1709
Joseph of Royston 1771
Joseph of Melbourn 1804.
DNA tests on all three show that they share a COMMON ANCESTOR but from what
I gather from the analysis, this person existed time-wise a good few
generations before the currently oldest known dna matched person ie James
Catley of Barley in 1709.
It is with this geneation difference in mind that we have resisted the
temptation to ASSUME that Joseph of Melbourn is the person baptized
19/11/1784 in Royston, son of Joseph Catley and Elizabeth Crane.
The dna test is complicated and to do with "marker distances" which is a
means of qualifying how many natural (normal) mutations take place and in
the case of the three samples taken from each of the above trees, as I
understand it, it dispells the obvious assumptive temptation.
Regards Tim Cattley.
No doubt Liz Cordingly, who is our Lister dna coordinator can give you a
much better indication than myself as to why we still reserve the three
trees as different entities.

I am wondering if anybody has been able to trace beyond these two in
the
line. Elizabeth Burdett my 3rd great grandmother and Joseph Catley is my
3rd great grandfather. My mother's mother was Elizabeth Charlotte Phyllis
Catley 1893-1934.
Regards
Elizabeth Williams
