Hi All,
Sometime age when looking at the Somerset Catley’s, it came to my attention that perhaps
Thomas the convict came from the Widcombe area. His parents being Thomas and Jane Vizer. I
now feel pretty sure that, that is the case. Whilst looking for some records I came across
some paper articles where Thomas was convicted for various items, one of which was
stealing pigeons. The names John Francis and William Clift where also associated with the
same crimes. One article relates to a theft from Widcombe. As they where young I find it
hard to believe that they would have travelled very far to steel something. Widcombe comes
under the Bath area. On the 1841 census there is a William Clift roughly the same age as
Thomas living at a farmers building Widcombe. There are also other articles in that area
relating to his crimes after Thomas was deported. There are records for John Francis but
its difficult to prove he was the same person as it is a common name.
I would also like to point out that the ING family are related to this tree which I have
taken back to Benjamin Catley from Wellow. It also links in Camerton Catley’s.
If anyone wishes further info on this please let me know or if anyone has any thoughts on
this please put your arguments forward.
Cheers
Liz
