How do Liz,
I think that you may well be correct in thinking that Bernie's ancestor
Thomas Catley is very likely to be a son of Thomas and Jane nee Vizer and I
can not understand why I did not arrive at this conclusion myself.
From my records (please let me know if you think otherwise) I note
that Jane
was Thomas' 2nd wife, the 1st being Rebecca Purnell who died in 1807
soon
after the birth of their 2nd son (both named George) who died 09/01/1807.
I have Thomas and Jane's first three children as bapt Widcombe 14/11/1811
followed by Henry in 1814 at Claverton St Lyncombe&Widcombe, followed by
Thomas in 1817 Holloway and finally Elizabeth in 1821 at Beechen Cliff
Place.
One of their children bapt in 1811 I have as a Thomas who I assume must have
died pre 1817 and the birth of Thomas2 in that year.
Noted that the above mentioned parishes are all close to oneanother and to
the S.E. of Bath City.
I have two of Thomas' brothers as marrying ie William in 1830 and Henry in
1839.
William's line looks to have fizzled out with the death of his child, a
daughter, Jane in 1837 at Beechen Cliff Place.
Henry married Mary Ann Axhorne in 1839, Bristol and they had a number of
children but I only have an extension of this line through their son Robert
(b 1848 Bristol) who was a clock maker and repairer and had a business in
Chester and twice married (1 Sarah Brittain 1876 Chester and 2 Mary Beech
1896 Chester) by whom he collectively had 7 children of which three were
males...Thomas died as an infant, Reginald Robert died in Q3 1914 whilst in
Army service in Northampton which just leaves Henry who married Alice
Edwards in Chester in 1904.
From what I can gather, Henry & Alice had just one child Mabel
Thelma.
There was another brother to Robert (clockmaker) ie Thomas Henry bapt
17/04/1842 Bristol and best I can make out is that he married Elizabeth in
about 1859. Can not find him in an 1861 census return but known from the
1871 census to have had a daughter, Edith Eva bir GRO Q2 1860 Bristol, St
Pauls. Looks very much to me that she too was an only child.
Thomas senior (b 1776 Camerton) had two brothers William (b 1778 Camerton)
and George (b 1783 Camerton) and I have a trace on the latter who looks to
have moved to London where he married Mary Taylor in 1806 From him I have
another three generations who lived in the Westminster and Marylebone
districts but my trail ends there despite the births of a number of male
children most of whom died young.
I was hoping that maybe a living Camerton tree male could be identified and
persuaded to take a Familytreedna test so that a comparison could be made
with Bernie for a Y37 match but I can not identify anyone.
Maybe you have had better research results ?
Tim

Subject: [CATLEY] Thomas Catley (convict)
Hi All,
Sometime age when looking at the Somerset Catley’s, it came to my
attention that perhaps Thomas the convict came from the Widcombe area. His
parents being Thomas and Jane Vizer. I now feel pretty sure that, that is
the case. Whilst looking for some records I came across some paper
articles where Thomas was convicted for various items, one of which was
stealing pigeons. The names John Francis and William Clift where also
associated with the same crimes. One article relates to a theft from
Widcombe. As they where young I find it hard to believe that they would
have travelled very far to steel something. Widcombe comes under the Bath
area. On the 1841 census there is a William Clift roughly the same age as
Thomas living at a farmers building Widcombe. There are also other
articles in that area relating to his crimes after Thomas was deported.
There are records for John Francis but its difficult to prove he was the
same person as it is a common name.
I would also like to point out that the ING family are related to this
tree which I have taken back to Benjamin Catley from Wellow. It also links
in Camerton Catley’s.
If anyone wishes further info on this please let me know or if anyone has
any thoughts on this please put your arguments forward.
Cheers
Liz
