Good day Andrew,
I note that apart from Liz who is still pondering the presumed family
connection between your Thomas Catley (Welton 1701) and Joshua
Catley (Welton 1731) son of Emery Catley, there has been no other
response to your interesting news concerning John of Welton and the
acquisition of land in 1613 (typo error 1813?) as gleaned from The
National Archives.
Disappointing certainly but not surprising methinks as I think I am
correct in saying that we only have one Lister who has family
connections with Thomas' line in the form of Jann Parks.
However, my Cat*ley bmd spreadsheet indicates that there
are a reasonable number of descendents of Thomas who
carry the family name in the form of 22 known births here in the
UK (I have excluded the NZ sub branch) yet none seemingly show
any interest in their genealogy.
The only ones who do, appear to be the Catley-Day sub branch
who are not genetically related but assumed the surname
inclusion to comply with a will and thereby inherit the family farm.
We already have a dna profile on the Emery Catley (Welton
and MSN) tree and really need a volunteer from the Thomas
of Welton clan. Have you any contact with and influence on any
direct male descendents who could be persuaded to provide a
dna test?
Regards Tim Cattley

Subject: [CATLEY] John Catley's 1650 Welton Copyhold
Dear all,
Browsing on the British Newspaper Archive recently I came across a
reference to Aubrey Catley advertising his life interest in one John
Catley's tenement, part of the Duchy of Cornwall manor of Welton. As
there seems to be no suitable 18th century John I reasoned that he might
be the same John in the 1641 Lay Subsidy and some references in the few
surviving MSN BTs.
On a subsequent visit to the National Archives I consulted a 1650 survey
of the confiscated lands of Charles Stuart, late Prince of Wales. Sure
enough a John Catley appeared on the second page, with a copyhold that
seemed to match some details of the 19th century ad. He was aged 60 and
had been granted the copyhold in year 10 James I (c1813). In the
reversion were his sons Thomas, aged 28, and Robert, aged 22. Thomas
would be a little too old to be having children in the early 18th
century, but perhaps he was the grandfather of the Thomas of Welton
line. He must surely be connected in some way for that lineage to be in
the possession of his copyhold in the 19th century. His brother Robert
is presumably the Robert Catley, yeoman, that makes an appearance in the
earliest register and the Wells marriage licences.
If anyone is interested in having a further look I can provide a
transcription of the entries, together with the customs of the manor,
and original images. The obvious next step would be to find out if the
Duchy of Cornwall archive has any manorial records relating to
Welton/MSN to link John and his sons to the lineage(s) recorded in the
PRs. Has anyone ever tried to make a search there?
Regards
Andrew Hayes (grandson of Eliza Catley, daughter of James Catley and
Eliza Anne Ford)
PS If there are any other offspring of the above couple out there in the
Catley cyberspace I have made substantial progress on that lady's
ancestry, going back to the mid 16th century for some lineages. Drop me
a line if you'd like to know more.
