Well done Anthony,
On pursuing the Oakley lead and coming up with a definitive answer as per
John Charles Oakley and his "housekeeper" Ellen Cattley aka Roberts in the
1911 census.
Everything looks to fit in place (almost) and there is no doubt that Mary
Jane and daughter are members of the Robert Catley of Rothwell family tree
and can now be allocated as such.
I don't think that either Kay or Liz have done any work on this tree but I
know that David has so the news re Mary Jane will doubtless interest him.
Just for those readers on this List who attended the last "all Cat*ley
reunion" in Oxford a couple of years ago:- Alexis Cattley from Australia who
came to see us there, at The Trout Inn is a member of the Rothwell Cat*leys,
which reminds me, I still need a dna test sample from him to see if his
origins fit with a match to either the other Yorkshire trees or maybe the
Lincolnshire ones.
As for Emily, suppose that as she died within her birth year of 1900 it
matters not if she was a daughter whereas for Hilda, things are a bit more
important in that it looks very much like she married Albert Lawrence in
1922. Then of course, there is the question as to what happened to Florence.

Tim, Think I have got it! Check out Jo Charles OAKLEY and his
housekeeper
Elen [sic] Roberts at Kettering in 1911. She is single 32 and born East
something-ley Leeds. Her children are Florence Roberts 6, Frances Roberts,
3 and Herbert Roberts 2.
To recapitulate for listers who may be losing the thread. Ellen Cattley
from East Ardsley was the illegitimate daughter of Mary Jane Cattley.
Shortly after Ellen's birth, Mary Jane married Frederick Roberts and they
moved to Northants. Ellen later became the mistress of Joseph Oakley who
can be assumed to be the father of Florence (not yet identified as a
Cattley), Frances Mary O[akley] Cattley, Herbert Oakley Cattley and James
W. O[akley] Cattley Cattley (born after the 1911 census). The parentage
and fate of Emily and Hilda Cattley remain moot. Ellen clearly styled
herself as Roberts but the GRO used her legal name Cattley when
registering the children.
It is possible that Ellen married Vernon Aspital in 1914.
Anthony

Good point Anthony,
Ellen Cattley bir GRO Q3 1879 Wakefield-East Ardsley shows on the '81 cens
as a grandaughter to James&Emma (nee Broadhead) Cattley residing in East
Ardsley with their daughter Mary J (Jane) Catley (single) and aged 19.
There
were younger female siblings to Mary Jane but not of childbearing age so
the
conclusion must be that this Ellen is an illig't daughter of Mary Jane.
These people are known members of the "Robert Catley (1830) of Rothwell"
family tree. Have not found this Ellen again in '91 onwards so must
remain
a possible contender for the N'hants Ellen.
Ellen Cattley bir Q2 1877 York (Walmgate) is a bit of an enigma and has
been
bothering me for some time. There are quite a number of Cattley birth
events
recorded in York at this time and belong to the Edmund Catley of Bilton,
Robert Catley of Garforth and Stevan Catlay of Normanton trees but I can
not
identify this Ellen in any of the census returns (reminder to self:-
double
check this again) because logic tells me that she should be a Bilton
Catley
member due to the Walmgate connection.
