For those Listers who are interested in the Stavan Catlay of Normanton (Yorkshire) line m
Elizabeth Jube in 1609 and are aware of the involvement of the two Cattley branches
thereof, who went out to Russia and eventually founded Merchant Businesses there, you will
be interested to learn that an Academic dissertation of public discussion on the subject
of "MAKING A COMMUNAL WORLD" (English Merchants in Imperial St Petersburg) took
place on the 22nd January 2005 At the University of Helsinki by permission of their
Faculty of Social Sciences.
This part of a research series in Anthropology was researched by Marie-Louise Karttunen.
The transcript is to be found on the Internet under the heading:- MAKING A COMMUNAL WORLD
and the site can be accessed as follows:- ethesis.helsinki.fi/julkaisut/
val/sosio/vk/karttunen/makingac.pdf
Be warned! This consists of an acrobat file of 320+ pages which if you are like self, non
broadband will take some 25 minutes to download so unless you are specifically interested
in the "Russian Cattley connection" best not bother.
However Erica+Ingrid (AU) Joan (NZ) and Ken (BZ) "fill your boots" there is lots
here to put flesh on the bones as the Cattleys feature heavily in Karttunens thesis
I have not yet begun to attempt to digest the information but it is clear straight away,
that it will be necessary to follow up Karttunens sources as there are numerous ref's
to Cattley dairies.
Best wishes to all Tim Cattley
Hi Tim
I don't think my branch descended from Stavan Catley in 1609, but out of
historical interest I've just been looking at the transcript and found it
really interesting.
The link you sent has a break in it so I was unable to reach the pdf, I
found it by googling the title and have pasted the link below.

Thank you again.
best wishes
