Subject: [CAT...] DNA Testing
Hello everybody,
Just to let you know that my original email on the subject has been
intercepted by the founder of the GENEALOGY-DNA mailing list and she has
corrected me in that the Lab that did the DNA test on my family were
incorrect in suggesting to me that the DNA SGM Plus test that was given is
any good for "mutual Roots tests".
The SGM Plus test is specific to investigate immediate parentage of a child.
It is of no use to investigate "common ancestry" in a genealogical sense.
What we need is Y chromosome tests which are only carried on the male line
but positively indicate if a family connection exists through infinite
generations.
Am advised that the place to look is as follows
http://www.genetealogy.com/resources/html/cat11.html
Maybe the thing to do is to all have a squint at this web site and then
after discussion make a collective decision as to where we go from here?
I know there have been many instances where people have undergone such tests
in the hope that A is related to B etc and become very disappointed when
they discover that no connection exists. In most cases, these are very
"personal and immediate" such as hoped for half brother/sister proof?
In our case however, I for one, see it as a possible "all or nothing" test.
None of us have anything to loose and if no genetic connections were
forthcoming, well, it means simply that the origins of the Cat*leys are more
diverse than some think (it would certainly blow the Catthley Gilbertine
Priory source out of the window!) but who knows, we may well get some
surprises which would kick start renewed interest.
Am advised that the test is still mouth swab rather than hair strands but
hopefully the cost/test will be well below the £240 that I mentioned, so Kay
can pick herself up off the floor and smooth her ruffled feathers!
Maybe we can get a "discount for quantity" which would bring individual
charges down to a more acceptable level?
Anyway have a look and lets see what you all think.
Regards
TimC
