Hello Peter,
Thanks for the contact.
Hope you had success on your Cattley ancestor hunt in Yorkshire (this is
written on the assumption that you will not read the e-mail until your
return now) and please be aware that as I am also a Cattley from Yorkshire
roots (Parishes of Normanton, Clifford, Bramham and Bolton Percy) am
especially interested to learn as to how you got on as will no doubt be Kay
H?
There has been plenty of correspondence over the last few years on this net
re Cat(t)leys who's origins stem from Lincs,Essex, London and Herts with
branches moving to Gloucestershire/Somerset and South Wales and of course
the proverbial immigrations to "The Colonies" as were but little concerning
us Yorkshire based name holders who's origins seem to be spread across the
County from Leeds to York and on to Hull.
A calculated guess on my part is that we may well be tied in with the
N.Lincs Cat(t)leys but no proof exists that I know of.
Re your points:
1. It seems as if usual DNA tests for ancestry involve the Y chromosome
only and thus as such as your Cattley connections are via your paternal
grandmother, the trace would be broken at that point more is the pity.
2. Kay is working on a contact that seemingly do meaningful testing for
£90/head which is obviously more attractive but would still not help you
given 1 (above) facts.
However, as Mick Catley and LLM indicate, DNA testing only goes so far, is
very narrow in its capabilities, can not be used to span female links and is
no substitute for basic archive research work but still may have its place
in the long term general order of things as far as our Listers are
concerned?
Maybe my curiousity in DNA tests is fired by the fact that my Tree is
seemingly traced back to its archive "limit" and I have nowhere else to go
in that direction and thus think laterally and wonder if there are any other
lines that exhibit the same gene pool indicating a tantalising connection
that can not be found through archive sources on my side.
If a genetic connection could be established with others then it would
vitalise and focus research with a purpose.
Best wishes, do let us know if you had any success in your searches,
Regards TimC

Hello Tim,
A quick two points before we go off to Yorkshire for a few days' ancestor
hunting.
1. My Cattley descent is through my paternal grandmother, so not sure how
useful it is for the currently proposed tests.
2. £180 is way more than we can afford at present, so unless/until the
prices come down I'll reluctantly be unable to take part.
Regards,
Peter Swinbank
