Hello Kay,
Well, Marge seems to think that she e-mailed us both in thanks but I fancy
its one of those cases (and I have quite a few of them myself!) where she
probably thought she had but in fact had not. Not to worry.
As to if this John and Catherine are the right people:- I think they must
be, as the information comes from both branches of the Pennsylvania Cattleys
quite independently of eachother.
It will be interesting to see if the John Catley death cert turns out to be
a lead for either you or maybe Marge or both! Not quite sure re your points
about Cridling Stubbs and John Catley d 1872 and the Coveney list because
Geralds list was based on Cattleys only (i.e. no Catleys) and the John
Cattley d 1872 on it shows that the Registration District was Tadcaster
which is quite a lot further North. Anyway, I have made a note of the
Stephen Catley m Hannah Benton bit, no doubt you will fill me in on the rest
sometime.
Agree with you concerning the proliferation of Cat*leys in Leeds remembering
that at the same time there were numerous other hatchings going on out in
the country villages and small Towns right across Yorkshire as many Parish
Records attest. It is a pity that there are not more namesake researchers
helping because there are quite a few Cat*ley families still living in
Yorkshire who doubtless have their roots in the locality yet show no
interest in research beyond polite replies to my letters written in the
1980's giving their known history which only goes back about three
generations.
Regards Tim

Hi Tim,
I haven't heard from Marge, but I'm glad that she picked up the info we
had,
and I haven't seen another 'John & Catherine' having
babies on the IGI at
all,
and certainly not in that time frame, so if she is confident that John &
Catherine
are hers, then I think that's probably as accurate as we can get at this
stage.
Certainly the fact that Catherine was on her own in 1881 seems to suggest
that
her children were living elsewhere.
I recently sent away for a John Catley death cert (died Leeds 1844) this
John
could be my g-g-gfather or could be Catherine's husband John, (or another
one)
so when I get it I will let you know. Life would have been considerably
simpler
if the Catleys had been a little more adventurous with the names of
their children !
Those other names you mention don't ring any bells, however, there was a
whole
family of Catleys procreating in Leeds at virtually the same time as mine.
Whether
or not they were related to me is the maddening question.
Please bear in mind that I also have a little mini tree which probably
isn't
mine,
from Cridling Stubbs..which starts from your Coveney list:
Stephen Catley m Hannah Benton 1746
to:
John Catley who died unmarried 1872 , farmer of Cridling Stubbs
(about 10 miles from Normanton)
- which is a couple of miles from Pontefract/Knottingley.
Presumably his sister Eleanor (who married Mr Eccles I think)
inherited. If you have anyone doing that area.
all the best
kay
