Hi Tim and All,
I have discovered that a Joseph Catley with family went to Canada. He is recorded as being
at the military settlement in Perth Lanark County in 1817.
I have found him on the 1820 census recorded as 1 adult male, 1 adult female, 1 male child
over 12 and 2 female children over 12. He arrived on the Maidan Ship 15/7/1817. On
9/9/1817 he was located at Elmsley Lanark County. ref. C7 NE28 SDP. I dont know what this
tands for except SDP means Settling Duties Performed. He is recorded on the 3/6/1821
census at Elmsley as Joseph Kittley.
The ship Maidan 1 was later sunk in the red sea. The offices of the shipping company where
at Whitehaven later to move to Liverpool. The military settlement was opened in 1816 for
mainly Scottish people that had been in various regiments which leads me to believe that
Joseph was in the Army!! The settling of duties was the land that was given to ex military
personnal for a job well done. Joseph would have been 38. This is the same Joseph that was
a widower living with Benjamin Catley in USA on the 1850 census.
Is there anybody out there that could assist me in further research with the military side
of things?
Cheers
Liz
