I am writing to tell you all that the John Rylands Library in Manchester is
about to be reopened and the Queen is to receive a bouquet of Cattleya
orchids. John Rylands' third wife was Enriqueta Augustina Tennant the grand
daughter of Harriet Tennant nee Cattley and the great-granddaughter of
Stephen Cattley and Fraces Anna Marea Cattley nee Bode. On John Rylands'
death Enriqueta gave the money for the library. She then 'purchased the
Althrop Library, for which it is understood, Lord Spencer had refused a
tempting offer. This library of 40,000 books, including Bibles in 300
languages and a fine collection of early printed works...' ('The Times,
Saturday, February 15, 1908, page 4).
I thought you would all be interested. I am progressing with the Tennants
and if you want a copy of the tree, please tell me. Ros Chapman, 63 Bond
St, Mosman, NSW, 2088, Australia.
