Hi All:
I am in need of advice or guidance before I get carried away ordering a bunch of
certificates which may or may not be connected to my branch of the family tree.
My grandfather, Elijah Catley (b. 19 Oct 1884) lived with his parents Elijah & Sarah
Catley in Northampton at the time of the 1901 census. By 1909 he was married to May Agnes
Green ( a local girl) and firmly established in Southend-on-Sea. I grew up in the town and
I cannot work out how Elijah and his parents ended up there if it wasn't for some
family connection!
In the 1909 census Sivilla Catley is a 42 year old widow working as a servant in
Staplehurst, Kent.
Am I wrong in thinking that she must be a relative of mine when the only deaths listed for
Rochford in the GRO Indexes kindly researched by Liz are:
1.. Sarah Catley d. 1917 Age 67 ( great grandmother)
2.. Elijah Catley d 1923 Age 76 ( great grandfather)
3.. Agnes May Catley d 1924 Age 8 ( Aunt)
4.. Sivilla Catley d 1936 age 78 (Unknown)
The Marriages Listed in Rochford
1.. Elijah Catley & May Agnes Green 1909 ( Grandparents)
2.. Eric G. Catley & Ms. Furby 1921 Unknown
3.. Frederick Thomas Catley & May Houghton 1932 (Uncle)
There also Marriages listed for Southend:
1.. Joan M. Catley & Mr. Crane (unknown)
2.. Jack Catley & Agnes McNicol Morris ( Parents)
3.. Francis D. Catley & Ms. Peters (unknown)
Unfortunately the GRO Birth indexes that is on the database cannot shed any further light
on the issue because it stops in 1900 however I would be interested to hear of any further
Catleys descended from the "Midsomer Norton" enclave that migrated to the South
Wales Coalfields and then seemed to scatter to all points. Certainly Elijah elder sister
Lucy & her husband Albert Jopson were also in Northampton at the time of 1901 census.
I know there were Catleys in North Essex which I believe have different roots but is it
likely they wandered south and whether Sivilla, Eric G. and Joan M. just happen to end up
the Southend at the same time as my Grandfather was establishing his family there too?
Best regards
Glynis
