Hi Ros,
See this site for an explanation of the DL system.
http://www.leics.gov.uk/index/your_council/about_leicestershire/leicester...
My husband Mike's sister's husband was a DL in Cleveland a few years
ago and he was not a local, though he was heavily involved in the
Territorial Army up there and mixed with the "A List". Likewise a
cousin of Mike's was a DL in Gloucestershire, and he did not hail
from there either, but he is what one might call "well heeled".
Like Tim I don't know anything about JOseph TENNANT apart from what I
have from you of his descendants, and then it gets a bit disjointed
for your own bit, so I would like to talk privately about that
sometime. I'd be interested to know what you have discovered about
the TENNANTs The last I have is all that wonderful material for a
romantic novel with Juana Camila DALCOUR and her BRUCE descendants.
Time I went to bed !
Warmest regards....... Erica

I have a Joseph Mason Tennant whose aunt was a Harriet Cattley. I am trying
to find out a bit more about the Tennant family. In 1791 when James Tennant
married Harriet Cattley, James was listed as a Broker and Merchant, when he
was 23 years old so I assume the family had standing in the late 1700s.
Any ideas.
