Tim,
The date I did not get as the first time I accessed the Times the date was
printed out with the article but this time it was not so I have to get into
town (Sydney) to the State Library and get the dates, etc. I am allergic to
air-conditioning and have been away a lot lately so have not been able to
get in again but intend to get there very soon. Ros

Subject: [CAT...] Stephen Cattley Tennant [The Times letter]
Ros,
Hey, thanks for the Times letter extract (what was the year by the way?)
because I was not aware that Stephen Tennant was involved with Cattley
Russian Trade (but Joan and Erica might have been) but I suppose it was
always a distinct possibility seeing that his grandfather Stephen Cattley
had businesses out there.
What is even more interesting is that the Times letter clearly indicates
that Edward Law the British Chaplain at St Petersburg (infact the Chaplain
within the British Embassy there, a title he held for 44 years) plus his
family were on board The Sirius and going on the order of signatures, looks
to have been the likely instigator of the letter.
Even more interesting is the fact that Stephen Tennant and Edward Law were
related via a Cattley marriage in that Edwards sister married James Richard
Cattley.
Talk about "keeping things in the family". But then they did a lot of that
in those days I think.
Regards
