Well they did start from humble beginnings,
One was a Miller (corn and water wheel) and another a Blacksmith and a
third a Tenant Farmer.
The tenant farmer must have had some brain genes because all four of his
sons "made good", one starting up a Timber business in York and the other
three making their way to London and starting from the bottom, became
merchant and business traders as you know.
Thus was formed a Cattley "dynasty" which over the next 150 years became
exceedingly wealthy with many branches. However, just as families can expand
and make money collectively,so can they contract and loose it again!
It is interesting to note that my Tree, as large as it once was/generation
in the mid 1800's has now contracted to being a shadow of its former self
with only just three sub branches left here in the UK with young males to
carry the name forward.
Also interesting is the point that many members decided out of choice (not
necessity) to move to the "Colonies" and this is where out Tree has seen a
second expansion in terms of individuals/generation. If it was not for our
"Colonial Cattleys" this line would be very slim indeed!

I must say, speaking as one finding a lot of agricultural labourers
in
my line, that your lot must have been very entrepreneurial and dynamic,
Tim.
Yours all seem to have been running businesses, initiating
import-export routes to Russia, directing insurance companies or
thinking about building new railway lines!
My ancestors around that time were probably hoeing turnips and
snatching a few hours sleep behind hay ricks. (Not that there is
anything wrong with that.)
