Hi Kay,
Just a few comments: we already know that it is the John Catley b Bilton
Ainstey 1798 who is Marges Gt Gt Grandfather who m Catherine Dawson at St
Peters, Leeds 2nd Dec 1823.
Again by supposition, it is reasonable to think therefore that John was bapt
1802 son of John and Mary Catley of Bilton.
If we are correct, then it could be that John m Mary Cartwright of Poppleton
in 1799.
Again IF that is correct then the news could be very interesting for Marge
because John and Mary had five sons and three daughters which could have
resulted in there being living issue from these other siblings of Johns.
As for John 2 at Garforth:- There would appear to be a direct line back
from him via father and grandfather both named Thomas to a gt grandfather
Robert Cattley who m Ann Dib in 1731.
Await your results with great interest.

Dear all interested in Yorkshire,
As with everything we do, this is all supposition....but....
1. John Catley, b. Bilton Ainstey 1798 - I think Marge is descended
from him.
(There were at
least two distinct Catley familys in Bilton Ainstey @ 1800). If
I am
correct, he married Catherine
Dawson and lived in Seacroft.
2. John Catley, b. Garforth 1799 - The Garforth tribe are
considerable. I have
alot of info on them
and their descendants. I think this John stayed in Garforth.
Garforth and Seacroft are within 5 miles of each other, and now form part
of Leeds
itself. Bilton Ainstey is further away.
I am sitting down to make a separate Family Tree Maker file/s for John 1.
and John
2. , because
I keep forgetting what I have found, and getting them mixed up. Will
keep
you posted.

OK Sandra,
Thanks for the comments, there is quite a nest of Cat(t)leys in the
Archives for
Garforth which I have been tapping into with only partial
success but hopefully Kay will have intercepted them also as she will have
been looking for ancestors in another close by village and of course there
is a reasonable chance that there could be a family link but if so, my
thoughts are that it would be probably before 1800.
Not forgetting of course that my own Cattley line comes from the same
general area near Leeds but from what I know of my pedigree the research is
intact back to the mid 1600's so any connection with yours or Kays probably
predates this time.
Best wishes
Tim

Thank you for the info. I'll look forward to hearing what Kay Heath
found
also.

Wow! Thanks for sharing this great news. I'm definately curious to get
to
the UK sometime just to look around and see where the family came from...
maybe sometime in 2007. That'd be awesome! I'd be curious to see if there
are people in the area with a family resemblance too.

Hi Marge and everybody,
As you will already know, your ancestors names are to be found on the
UK 1881
Census for what was then the village of Garforth which today is a
district in the City of Leeds in W.Yorkshire.
I have been doing a bit of digging on the LDS archive data trying to
pick up on
the information which both Louis and James gave me quite
separately which was that your gt gt grandfather was John Cattley who
married Catherine Dawson in 1820. From the data present it looks as if John
and Catherine actually married on 2nd December 1823 at St Peters Church,
Leeds.
There is an entry for a John Cattley bapt 11th January 1799 in
Garforth where
the parents are named as Thomas Cattley and Ann. There is
also a marriage listed in Garforth on the 22nd April 1794 when Thomas
Cattley married Ann Fletcher. Further back still, there is an entry for
Thomas Cattley bapt Garforth 17th May 1769.
I very much suspect that this Thomas is your gt gt gt grandfather.
Shall probably know more when Kay Heath gets back home to Australia
having had
a go at the Leeds archives and with luck she may well have
extracted this and more, information concerning the different Cat(t)ley
families in the Leeds area over the last 300 years.
