Hi Mick, Tim, Dennis and all,
My aim in contacting Tim initially was just to see where we 'fit' in terms
of the wider Catley Tree.
To do this it was eventually necessary to pass on to Tim the Catley tree
that I have at present which has been complied from 2 sources:
1. Dennis' family history information which was kindly passed on to me
(thank you again Dennis) traces the ancestors of my William Aubrey Catley.
2. My own research beginning with William Aubrey Catley and his
descendants.
I believe Dennis and I are connected because of the connection between
William and two siblings who went to New Zealand. William's obituary
notice
(sing out if you want a copy) states that he had a brother James
Thomas
Catley and sister who went to New Zealand. James was Paymaster and
receiver
of land revenue in Nelson.
Since there is possibly now some concern with the movements of this family
after/before Bristol, I will have to hand over to those of you who have
travelled down that research path - although, please know that I am more
than happy to roll my sleeves up and help out.
Mick and Dennis, I will send you what I have- that way you both have an
idea of what I sent to Tim, keeping in mind that perhaps you have updated
the Catley tree since sending it on to me, Dennis.
I can't wait to hear from you all soon and, again, if I can be of any help
to any of you, please include me in the researching of this (I belong to a
Family History centre which has wonderful resources).
Thanks again everyone.
Kindest regards
Jann Sutton Parkes

For interest, the obituary notice also states:
William died May 16 1907 aged 79 yrs.
William was 'a native of Bristol, arriving in Tasmania aboard the ship
Aberdon, Captain Lamont, in 1853'.
It also states that 'for many years Mr Catley was connected with the
Orange
institution and the Protestant Alliance Friendly Society and
occupied
prominent offices in connection therewith'.

G'day Tim,
I have not seen the information you have exchanged with Jann but your
commentary on the move of the Catleys from Barley to Bristol does not
accord with the records that I have. The earliest Hertfordshire
Catleys I have are the family of James and Alice (not Ann ) and while
their marriage has been estimated by at least one person, I know of,
as 1709, neither the venue nor the date has been verified by any
records that I am aware of.
My records suggest the migration to Tisbury, Wiltshire occurred with
James Catley (c. 7 Nov 1740, Barkway, Hertfordshire) and his wife,
Martha. James was the grandson of James and Alice and the son of
Charles Catley and Mary Newman.
I noted that Dennis Catley traces his line which includes William
Aubrey Catley back to James of Chilcompton, b. 1757 although thanks
to Phil Clements he goes back to Midsomer Welton. Phil's records for
the Midsomer Norton Catleys predates both the Tisbury and
Hertfordshire Catleys with Thomas (b. 1701 Midsomer Norton, Somerset)
son of Thomas Catley and Grace.
I am not aware of any linkage between the Wiltshire and Somerset Catleys.
I would be interested in comparing my records with Jann's if she is
prepared to exchange her information with me.
