Hello Liz,
You have got me on this one I am afraid and I honestly do not know where you
should go from here other than to suggest that if I was in your position,
and with no other ideas up my sleeve, I think I would put the question to
The National Army Museum in Chelsea.
I know through my own researches on Charles Cattley who was the Head of
Military Intelligence for Lord Raglan in the Crimean War, that they have a
fantastic archive of information and thus it is well worth trying
them, especially if the Perth Lanark County military settlement was for ex
British Army personnel awaiting a land settlement by way of some form of
"payoff" from service.
If this was a form of emigration/discharge from service offer, then the
National Army Museum I think should be able to assist you re the mechanics
of the job and may be able to point you to archive sources associated with
it.
This is a long shot but well worth the try in my opinion.
Best wishes Tim Cattley

Subject: [CAT...] military settlements
Hi Tim and All,
I have discovered that a Joseph Catley with family went to Canada. He is
recorded
as being at the military settlement in Perth Lanark County in 1817.
I have found him on the 1820 census recorded as 1 adult male, 1 adult
female, 1 male child over 12 and 2 female children over 12. He arrived on
the Maidan Ship 15/7/1817. On 9/9/1817 he was located at Elmsley Lanark
County. ref. C7 NE28 SDP. I dont know what this tands for except SDP means
Settling Duties Performed. He is recorded on the 3/6/1821 census at Elmsley
as Joseph Kittley.
The ship Maidan 1 was later sunk in the red sea. The offices of the
shipping company where at Whitehaven later to move to Liverpool. The
military settlement was opened in 1816 for mainly Scottish people that had
been in various regiments which leads me to believe that Joseph was in the
Army!! The settling of duties was the land that was given to ex military
personnal for a job well done. Joseph would have been 38. This is the same
Joseph that was a widower living with Benjamin Catley in USA on the 1850
census.
Is there anybody out there that could assist me in further research
with
the military side of things?
Cheers
Liz
