Hi Jann,
Hopefully you will have picked up on Mick Catleys reply and will act
accordingly?
The situation re Cat*ley origins here in the UK is much more diverse than I
think that any of us Listers first realised.
In very general terms it seems as if there were a number of individual Trees
all bearing the same root name that stem from very different parts of
England.
These "pockets of Cat*leys" are found in the counties of Lincolnshire,
Yorkshire, Essex, Cambridgeshire,Hertfordshire, Somerset and London.
Whereas the main body of these Tree centres remained regional, some branches
moved around quite early such as the move by some of the Hertfordshire
Catleys to Wiltshire and of course, during the whole time there was a
traffic of people from all regional centres towards London so that by the
mid 1800's, there was a general mix of Cat*leys in the general London area
and to complicate things even further, that was the time when the general
emigrations started to "The Empire".
All this has become apparent since individual Listers have thrown their
individual research information into this web "melting pot" of pooled
resources.

HI Tim,
Thanks again for your wonderful info!
So.. when looking for my Catley lot on Catley websites do I look at the
Anstey Catleys or is there another group name for the ones from Bristol?
Thanks
Jann

Hello again Jann,
OK I have it, thanks to your private attachment and I now am "with it" in
as
much as your Catley Roots start in the Hertfordshire village of
Barley cir
ca
1709 when James Catley married Ann.
As Mick Catley intimates, this beginning of what has become a major
Cat*ley
Tree seemed to migrate to an adjacent village, namely Barkway and a
generation later to a slightly larger Hertfordshire village by the name of
Anstey. Most of the enlargement of this Tree over the next 200 years or
so
seemingly took place from Anstey and thus, rightly or wrongly, this
overall
Tree is now referred to in our genealogical terms as "The Anstey
Cat*leys".
However in your case, it looks as if your Charles' sub branch was an early
pre Anstey move away from Barley/Barkway to Tisbury in Wiltshire and from
there to Bristol and then onwards to the Antipodes.
The Wiltshire connection is interesting with a seeming accidental name
change from Catley to Cadley.
The Anstey Cat*leys appear to have a major roll in the appearance of the
Cat*ley name in Australia one way or another and I think that our new
found
Lister, Ted Cattley is also of the Anstey Tree but I need to check
this
out
yet to confirm..
Best wishes Tim Cattley
