Hello Ted,
I have only caught half of an exchange of mail between yourself and Anthony where you are
giving him details about your grandfather Edward Charles Cattley.
Very difficult when coming in from the side on a one way communication but I can only
assume that Anthony is attempting to pinpoint you into a known Tree?
Your ancestry Ted, is quite clear to me, in that you belong to the "Anstey Cat*ley
Tree which goes back to your 5 x Gt Grandfather Edward Catley married Martha Lilly in
Anstey, Hertfordshire, in 1769 and from him back to your 7 x Gt Grandfather James Catley
of Barley in Hertfordshire, who married Alice in circa 1709.
You will probably have noticed in the replies to The Cat*ley Researchers Roll Call that
there are persons such as Mick Catley who are specialising in the James Catley of Barley
Tree.?
As for your Cattley V's Catley spelling, I think you will find that the "double
T" spelling goes back before your grandfather:-
There is an entry in the UK Public Records for the birth of a Charles Cattley in 1860 in
the Royston Reg District which was the District Reg Office covering Anstey at that time.
This is surely your Gt Grandfather?
There is no marriage for him for the year 1885 under Cattley but there IS a Charles Catley
listed as marrying a Sarah Coxall in that year.
As for your Grandfather Edward Charles, I can not see him in the births Register under
Catley for 1885 BUT there IS an Edward Charles Cattley born 1885 in Kingston.
There are some 21 Kingstons in the UK and although I have not researched that far, it
seems likely to me that the location could have been Kingston-on-Thames in the London
area. I say this because there were other Cat*leys of the Anstey Tree who were residing in
that Kingston at around the same time.
So perhaps your Grandfather naturally used the double T spelling having been registered as
such?
Regards Tim Cattley
