Hi Marge,
Ezra, George and Henry Cattley were indeed the names of your grandfathers brothers, not
uncles and they feature in the UK 1881 Census along with Amos (your grandfather) and
parents Ann and Thomas. They lived at Moor Garforth at that time.
Nearby at Low Side, Garforth and also included in the Census was another set of Cattleys
consisting of William, his wife Sarah and sons Caleb and George.
Micks shipping list extracts indicate that an Amos Catley arrived in New York in September
1881 on the ship The City of Berlin whereas on July 1882 a William,Thomas,Henry,George and
Eyrn Cattley landed also after crossing on the same ship.
Liz Cordingly has suggested that the Garforth Cattleys are possibly the persons involved.
The New York Authorities may well have made spelling mistakes and dropped a T from
Amos' surname and by the same token written Ezra's name as Eyrn. The other problem
is that those on the 1882 crossing are classified as coming from Wales whereas of course
Garforth is very much in Yorkshire!
Kay Heath and self have yet to discover if there was a family link between William and
Thomas but if we are to assume the "obvious" from the shipping lists, then it
looks as if Thomas' eldest son Amos went out to the USA alone and that the following
year, Thomas plus his other sons from Moor Garforth plus William from Low Side Garforth,
followed him.
This would have left bothThomas and Williams wives behind plus Williams two sons Caleb and
George.
I suppose that the New York Emigration Authorities could have made a mistake with the 1882
landing of Cattleys and recorded them as coming from Wales rather than from Yorkshire but
in an attempt to decypher the truth behind it all, this is why I asked if anyone covering
the South Wales Cat*leys could identify the names?
Hope this all makes sense to you?
Regards Tim

Hello Liz,
Thanks for looking.
Am aware of the Garforth Cattleys in the 1881 Census and infact they are the
subject of some research that Kay Heath and self are doing on Cat*ley
Yorkshire trees.
Whilst some of the names match, I think it improbable that Yorkshire persons
would describe themselves as Welsh when interviewed by the New York
emigration Authorities upon arrival at Ellis Island.
There were a number of Yorkshire mining Cat*ley families in the general
Leeds (Yorkshire) area and of course this includes Marge Cattleys kin who
did indeed emigrate from Seacroft which was not many miles from Garforth and
indeed the Shipping List clearly shows her Grandfather Amos' passage to New
York in 1881.
Thus I still think that the persons depicted on the shipping list are a
South Wales set of Cattleys.
Regards Tim
