Hello Anthony,
Had a look at
familysearch.org (IGI) for your Thomas reckoning that he was
probably born around 1814 or thereabouts but could only find Thomas' in
Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire,Lincolnshire and London. Nothing seemed to fit in
with the obvious, being that he was likely born in the south west of England
and possibly therefore of the Somerset Norton Catley clan.
Furthermore, none of those Thomas' from further afield had a Thomas recorded
as the fathers name which obviously throws them out of the running.
There is a Thomas Cattley b Yorkshire 1814 with a father also Thomas which I
suppose is a long shot possible but I still think the answer lies closer to
Bristol/Bath with an as yet unidentified set of Catleys.
Regards Tim

Hello Ted,
thanks for the info.
I confused myself as I thought you were referring to
the Australian Navy. I don't know why I did that.
My ancestor (Thomas Catley) came over to Australia
in 1837 as a convict. I can't trace his roots because I
only know his father's name (also Thomas). His mother's
name wasn't on his death certificate. So it's been a frustrating
dead-end for me.
I'm sure you and I belong to different branches, though.
My Thomas, the convict, was born in Bath so I presume he
is part of the Midsomer Norton clan?
Thanks again
Anthony
