Hi Liz,
The more I look at the evidence on this one, the more inclined I am to think
that you must be right and it is the Yorkshire Garforth Cattleys, all
miners, emigrating to the USA in 1881/82 and that the American Port
Emigration Authorities mistakenly recorded them as Welsh rather than
Yorkshire-English!
One can only wonder as to the circumstances that lead to both father and all
sons in one family including the young Henry aged just 13, emigrating to the
USA seemingly leaving the wife and mother behind in Garforth.
I too have noted a couple of Irish Cat*ley connections and was surprised.
I do not wish to press Kay because I know she is busy on other things at
present but will be very interested to know in the long term as to what she
has to say about the Yorks Cattley emigration issue and any connection
between Thomas and William Cattley who feature in the Passenger Lists as
emigrating to the USA in 1882.

Subject: [CATLEY] new york pass list
Hi Tim,
I agree with what your saying about the family from Garforth. However I
have looked
at the other census for Wales for 71 and 81 and couldn't find
any names to correspond with the rough DOB. That's why I thought it was the
Garforth lot. I have found Joseph Catley born Bottesford Lincs in Canada and
New York, but it gives his place of origin as Ireland!!!!!!!!!!! Originally
I thought he was not my Joseph because of the Irish record, but I think he
went to Ireland and sailed to Canada from there. Whether they offered a
cheaper passage or better benefits for the Irish I don't know, but I am 99%
sure he is mine. Especially when he is living close to Zaccheaus his
brother.
Talk soon
Liz
