Dear all,
Funny that Mick should say this, because I have been going through the PR's
for
St Marys C of E , in Tadcaster (Yorks) and have found entries, which
although
pretty clearly written, are just not included in the IGI. There are parts
which
are very hard to read, as these entries were basically all the in 1700's,
but about
85% is fairly readable, yet there doesn't seem to be a huge lot of St Mary's
stuff
transcribed.
I don't know whether the IGI is a work
in progress, but certainly it pays to look at the original records.

Subject: [CAT...] Essex Cat(t)leys
G'day Listers,
For some time I have been searching unsuccessfully for the origins of
James Catley and his wife Alice who were the parents of the following four
children baptised in Barley, Hertfordshire:
Edward Catley 8 Nov 1710
Charles Catley 29 March 1714
James Catley 16 March. 1717
Hannah Catley 1 May 1720.
Many of their descendents settled in nearby towns and villages in
Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire.
With four children baptised in Barley it is likely that James and Alice
were married in the parish or moved there from a nearby village. However
the Barley parish records are incomplete, with burials starting in 1599,
baptisms 1686 and marriages in 1746. I have examined the parish registers
of other villages close to Barley in Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire
without finding any earlier records of the Catley name. I have also
studied the Allen Index of Hertfordshire Marriages 1538-1838, without
finding any early records of the Catley name.
As the British IGI has a number of Catley records from Essex in the 17th
century I have recently turned my attention to studying films of parish
registers from Essex in the vicinity of the boundaries with Hertfordshire.
I selected the parishes of Chigwell, Childerditch, Great Chishall, Little
Chishall, Chrishall and Clavering, none of which have had their records
included in the IGI. Unfortunately, many of the very early records are
illegible and I have may have misread them.
While I did not locate James and Alice, the parish register of Great
Chishall (1583-1747) has several Catley records of interest:
Thomas Catly baptised 14 Feb 1673, son of Thomas Catly.
Elizabeth Catley, baptised 17 Nov 1705, daughter of Wm Catley and
his wife.
James Catley, baptised 10 Mar 1719. son of William Catley and Mary
his wife.
John Cattley, baptised 9 Jun 1722, son of Will. Cattley and Jane
his wife.
William Cattley buried 17 April 1723.
James Catley Jn. buried 29 Mar 1729.
Joseph Catly, baptised 17 Jul 1737, son of Joseph Catly and Mary
his wife.
Judah Catley, baptised 29 Nov 1743, daughter of Joseph Catley and
Mary his wife.
As they are not in the IGI, the records are probably new to the Catley
Database.
Regards,
Mick Catley
