Have had a scan through the PRO births for an Edward Catley and can find
just nine for the period 1850 to 1873 which I have taken to give his age as
an Able Seaman somewhere between 18 and 40.
It happens that there is one death recorded for 1891,* Edward, Recording
Office: Newark, age 22 but I doubt that this is more than coincidence and
in any case this death is registered in the 2nd quarter for that year
whereas I note that the Times records the loss of the Prince Solkykoff in
December.
Other Edward Catleys are as follows
Edward Cuthbert b Midsomer Norton 1873
Edward Albert b Manchester 1871
Edward b Malton
1870
Edward * b Newark
1869
Edward.T b Peterborough 1866
Edward Percy b Clutton 1862
Edward b Axbridge
1862
Edward b Caister
1853
Edward b Royston
1850
As the ship was Cardiff based my best guess would be that if the individual
appears in the above list, it could be either Edward Cuthbert of Midsomer
Norton or Edward Percy of Clutton. I have no information to attach Edward
Percy to the MSN Catleys but as many Clutton Registered Catleys are of that
clan, I suspect that he is too.
Recall a London based set of Catleys re settling in South Wales but none of
above shown as born there.
Hope this helps

Subject: [CAT...] From The Times
Anyone missing an Edward Catley - perhaps this will be him.....
The Times, Thursday, Dec 17, 1891: pg. 7: Issue 33510; col D
Disasters AT Sea.
Messrs. Guirst and Co., Cardiff, yesterday received
the following telegram announcing the total loss of
their vessel, Prince Solkykoff, from the British Consul
at Brest:- "Reported total loss of the Prince
Solktoff of Porsal Rocks. All hands said to be lost
except one, rumoured to be the master."
> Later confirmed that only the chief mate survived of
the 19 man crew which included Able seaman Edward Catley.
> The piece goes on to say that the vessel had left Barry
with coals bound for St Nazaire on Fridday last.
> The vessel built in 1874 at Newcastle was a steamer of
894 tons.
