Hello Sharon,
Thanks for the response and also thanks for having a look for Baker &
Cattley, sorry it is proving difficult to find.
Erica reminds me that there may be a link here with 'Baker & Fletcher' and
'Baker & Cattley' in that it is possible that Fletcher was bought out by
Cattley.
Thus it may be worth having a look for Baker & Fletcher as opposed to Baker
& Co and see if a date sequence of events fits?
Best wishes Tim

Subject: [CATLEY] Baker & Cattley
Hi Tim
Just to let you know that I have been trying to find this firm of timber
merchants, but it's proving very tricky!
The Hampshire Record Office have absolutely no note of them whatsoever,
and
I have therefore been attempting to track them down via the
Southampton
City
Archives. They also can't find mention of the firm Baker &
Cattley, but
did
find in the 1811 directory for Southampton a listing of 'Baker
& Co.,
merchants, Moira Place, and nr the Quay, High Street'. They also have in
their indexes items relating to Charles Baker, timber merchant, who at
some
point became bankrupt. These are:
Abstract of title to land in Polygon Terrace, 1837 (D/PM Box 3/24/1-2)
Title Deeds 1829-1851 (SC4/3/1442, 1505 & 1743)
The Special Collections Library are also looking into it, so we'll see
what
they come up with.
I'll let you know when I hear anything further.
Sharon
