I've had a look at the WWI Army Pension records today and have an amendment to
make.
But first, John's reference to 'Thomas Newmarch Catley' of Steep Hill, Lincoln
is quite correct, he being my 3*grt grandfather.
However, just to clarify, Edith Catley married to William Walter Easterbrook was
born in Sheffield c.1880 the daughter , as I have recorded in my notes, of
Thomas Catley born at Scarborough in 1854 and his wife Charlotte. Thomas who
perhaps I should have recorded as 'Thomas Newmarch Catley' as per Edith's
marriage details was the son of Richard Catley of Kirmington.
Now, getting back to the Army records....
Edith's brother also known as Thomas Newmarch Catley' enlisted in 1916 at the
age of 39 yrs calling himself and signing himself as Tom Newmarch Catley.
He named his next of kin as being his sister, Edith Easterbrook of 2 Juberlee
Cottages, Eltham. He was an unmarried labourer.
Tom was deemed unlikely to become an efficient soldier due to suffering from a
double hernia and a rather nasty social disease. So he was discharged without
seeing active service abroad. His home address in 1916 was listed as 20 Liddon
Road, Plaistow.

Hello John,
Thought you had retired!?
I will send you Edith's marriage cert tonight and will be interested to
learn what you and David make of it because to my mind things do not quite
match up.
You may be interested to hear that I have at last obtained a Sheffield
Mineral Water Syndicate Ltd, Catley Abby Natural Seltzer Water - Ginger
Champagne, ash tray.
It is about the same size of your pristine china one but made of tin with
white enamel and black lettering with the regular "abbey building" in colour
in the centre.
It is a bit chipped at the edges but looks reasonable at a distance of a few
feet.
Cheers Tim
