This all sounds like an interesting and informative source David and your
selection of Richard Catley of Newark reminds me that he is to be found on
Chris Newalls Catley Database.
15/04/1881. Richard, son of Richard and Mary Catley christened. Father a
Publican of Water Lane.
That then got me thinking that we have only one Lister researching
Nottinghamshire Catleys and I am not at all sure that the Newark Catleys
come under her scrutiny anyway?
A quick look at Liz Cordinglys PRO B/M/D's for Catley indicates that between
1874 and 1900, there were 26 births recorded in Newark ie one birth for
each year! This to me suggests at least two families and over two
generations.
I have not delved into the Census extracts for Newark but the PRO Records
tell me that there was quite a bit of "activity" going on there.
Is anyone actively researching the Newark connection?

There are other Catleys appearing in the Army Pension Records.
What has interested me with these records are references to 'marriages' -
