G'day Mick (and any others who are working on the Barley/Barkway/Anstey Cat*ley
Tree),
Just to let you know that Elaine has now got a copy of Louisa Catleys (born Biggin, Anstey
1874) birth certificate and this confirms that Louisa's mother was Elizabeth (nee
Bentley) Catley.
This evidence is important in that it disproves the accepted current tree data in that
Samuel Catley m Elizabeth Bentley in 1850 and they had two children
Frances (Fanny) b 1851
Charles b 1854.
but that Elizabeth died in 1863 and that Samuel remarried (spouse unknown) and had the
following additional children
Emily Kate b 1867
Edward James b 1870
Louisa b 1874 .
From Elaine's searches we now know that the mother of Samuels
youngest child Louisa (named Elizabeth Louisa on her birth certificate) was Elizabeth
Bentley. Thus all Samuels children were born to Elizabeth.
The P.R.O. Lists do show an Elizabeth Catley as having died in 1863 (Royston Reg District)
but obviously whoever put the Anstey Tree data together, assumed wrongly that this was
Samuels wife which clearly it is not.
If any further proof is needed, it is to be found in the fact that Elizabeth died in
1904.
Furthermore, there are two other children who have been missed out of searches, namely
Annie b 1860 at Biggin, Anstey and also George b 1865 also Biggin, Anstey
So:-
Samuel Catley b 1821 Anstey d 1896 Anstey
married Elizabeth Bentley 1850 Anstey who d 1904.
7 children
Frances b 1851
Charles b 1854
Annie b 1860
George b 1865
Emily Kate b 1867
Edward James b 1870
Elizabeth Louisa b 1874
Information on Charles and Annie are to be found in Chris Newalls Cat*ley Database for the
1881 Census.
Elaine will probably offer Chris some more information concerning the fact that in 1881
the mother Elizabeth, was living in the East End with her eldest daughter Frances.
