Hi David,
I already had a feeling that somewhere down the line we would be related.
However as its Emma that links you to Catley's this would be no good testing
your DNA. When they do the testing for the DNA its genetic but they also
tell you which Halotype you are and it is from this that tells you where you
came from originally. Most people in England come from Southern France. This
is very strange indeed considering history as one would have thought it
being from the Saxons as you mentioned. I will check tomorrow where all
those that have done the test came from originally. Of course this is going
back pre ice age so we are talking thousands of years.
If you and John are related who is the connection. I already have your
details maybe I could look into it further to establish a link with my dad.
I know I can get back as far as Thomas and Mary whose children came from
Bottesford so we are looking at about 1770.
I have just recieved a death cert for Caroline Catley, she was blind and
lived with her Aunt Elizabeth Bailey on the 41 and 51 census in Dryppol
Yorkshire.
It states she was the daughter of Zaccheaus a joiner but deceased. I know
that Zacc died in 1875 Twickenham. Zac's other daughter Mary lived with her
grandad in Hastings. Zac was in a poor house around about that time. I need
to get the info on that and it might give me more clues. I think that he
farmed his children out to family especially Caroline as she was blind. His
first wife died young in 1826 so he wouldnt have been able to look after
them although he did remarry in 1827. Perhaps his new wife didnt want
children!! Then I have the other problem of Caroline b 7/4/1822 c 23/4/1824
Hastings and Caroline Ann c 21/4/1822 Sculcoates. Surely there cant be 2
Zac and Rebeccas unless one is from Zac's uncle Zac. Having said that I have
found Uncle Zac in Canada.

Hello Liz,
Do you have to be a present day Catley for the purposes of the test?
My Catley genes come via my paternal grandmother's mum (Emma Jane Catley,
1851 @
Lincoln) - would that be too far removed.
I don't consider this a necessity as such because (Frederic) John Catley and
I
descend from a mutual forefather up in north Lincs.
I've been following this DNA thread with interest and note you and John
share
the same Catley genes which I assume I must do as well.
But here's the thing, is it that the shared genes between you and John
actually
indicate a link specifically pertaining to the Catley line in Lincs as
opposed
to a more general link in terms of 'tribal/race origins'. I refer to
several
documentaries that have appeared on the UK TV Channels recently covering the
current indigenous population of selected regions down the eastern side of
England which sought to establish whether they were of Celtic or Anglo Saxon
descent etc. As you will be aware, there was a strong Danish presence in
Lincs.
Some of the results given in these documentaries were able to locate the
areas
over on the continent from whence the various individual's ancestors had
embarked from.
Over to you...sorry!

HI Michael, and all
Unfortunately it has to be the male side with the test we are doing. You
haven't got a any Catley male cousin's floating around. It doesn't matter
where in the world you live. The kit comes from America and they will post
it anywhere, they accept all major credit cards for payment on a secure
line
The only person who gets to know the results is yourself and me as
well
as
FamilytreeDNA of course. Its only when you get a match that they send
an
email to both matches stating there is a match. etc.
If anybody wants to look at the results let me know as I can paste them
and
send them to you, it doesn't give out names just results.

I know I am a member of the Norton St Philip Catley's (my maternal
grandmother) - is that any use? I have her tree well documented back a few
generations.
Only trouble I have, is that I live in Australia, Sydney.

Hi Liz,
I think you are referring to John Catley. He may be a full Frederic John
but
he answers to John.
If this is he (knowing that "John" had sent a dna sample) then there is no
doubt about the Lincolnshire connection Liz as we are fully aware that
Johns
roots are firmly in that County.
This new information rather tends to blow out of the water the neat theory
that all Cat*leys stem from a Lincolnshire central source who dispersed
South into East Anglia and thence to London and at the same time North
West
into Yorkshire.
What we now really need is a dna sample from a member of the Anstey
Cat*leys
from Hertfordshire plus a line known to be in the London/Essex area
before
the Lincs/Yorks/Herts Cat*leys started migrating that way. Also a sample
of
West Country Cat*ley is missing (Somerset Norton/Bristol etc) to
complete
the known spread of Catley geographical "pockets".
Just how many separate individual Cat*ley trees are there? We will never
know the full count unless more Listers participate.
Regards, Tim Cattley
