Hi All,
Just thought you might like to read this. If you do a female MTDna it will
only go back to the female side of the family. The gene is passed down
through the female but also a male from the mother then it stops with that
male. If like Derek you have a female connection and did the test it would
go back through to the Catley line on the female side but it would show only
her brothers.
15. I am female and another potential relative is male. How can we make a
DNA connection using Family Tree DNA?
There are two ways to answer this genealogical question. Ideally a match
would best be done by testing a known male member of your biological family,
(brother, father or first cousin), against the potential male relative. This
is our Y chromosome test which would allow us to also search for the Cohanim
gene.
The other method, (not as straight forward), utilizes the mother who passes
her mtDNA to both male and female offspring and this can be checked using
mtDNA or mitochondrial DNA. A match between the mtDNA of a male potential
relative and your mtDNA would mean you have a common female ancestor. A male
s mtDNA comes only from his mother and is not passed on to his offspring.
This is our Maternal Match.
As I see it, if you had a female lets say Ann Catley 10 generations ago that
is your gggg grandmother the children she had with her husband lets say Mr
Smith would carry the MTDNA. If she had a boy it would stop there but if she
had a girl it would continue through the line although her name changes
every time the female marries. If you had a male Catley that did a YDNA test
and he was the sister of Ann Catley you would have a match.Any comments on
the females doing a test?
