Hi Liz
You're definitely thinking along the same lines as me and I feel that this
could well be where a Cambridgeshire link could come from but as yet, I
can't get definite proof of the family links. One thing though that threw me
from considering Mary Catley as being Charles' mother and remarrying George
Appleton is the fact that it doesn't state on the marriage certificate for
Charles and Susan that his father John is deceased. I have come across
occasions though where the father IS deceased but not noted as such on the
certificate!
Susan Martin was also born a few years before her christening (probably more
likely to be 1817/1818) due to the fact that she married William Bentley in
the mid 1830's and had a son John Bentley in 1838 and was likely to have
been the mother of Robert Bentley born 1835.
I think Eliza and Rhoda who were living with Mary Appleton certainly were
children of James Catley and Sarah Fox who had both died by the time of the
1841 census and that she was indeed their aunt - William b.1830 I thought
could either have been her son or even perhaps a previously unidentified
child of James and Sarah's.
Everything does appear to 'stack up' to me, but it's just finding that vital
thing to prove it - could be worth checking to see if any of them left
Wills.

Hi All,
I think I have got it!!!!!!!!!!!
Charles Catley b abt 1823 Meesden married Susan Bentley b 1825. She was a
widow previously married to a Bentley. Her parents where William Martin and
Mary Warren they married 31/10/1816 Anstey.
On the marriage cert. it states John Catley as Charles father. Witness
Elizabeth Bentley and William Catley.
Elizabeth Catley b 1813-1822 married James Skipps in 1837 Buntingford. On
the 51 census is her brother William Catley b 1832 Meesden. They where
living in Anstey on the 51 census. Some of Elizabeth's and James children
where born in Meesden and some in Anstey before they went to live in Hornsey
by the 61 census.
Living with them on the 61 census is Joseph Martin and his wife plus a child
Joseph Martin is the brother of Susan Martin.
Could Mary b abt 1801 have been Charles mother and her husband John died
so she married George Appleton. On the 41 census she has Eliza b 1828 Rhoda
b 1834 and William b 1830 living with her. Eliza and Rhoda could have been
nieces or cousin's. William would be her son which fits the bill for William
living with the Skipps. This would also tie in the Elizabeth Bentley as she
married Samuel which was Eliza and Rhoda's brother.
I am now going to get a cup of tea. If anyone can throw some light on this
let me know.
Cheers
Liz

Hi Liz and All
Please disregard the references to Susan Martin/Bentley in my previous e
mail as she is in fact the wrong Susan! This particular Susan wasn't married
to William Bentley and therefore Robert and John Bentley were not her sons.
Sorry for any confusion!
