Hi Allan,
My IGI printouts (ex fische) for Herts give very little info for Royston, to
the point where I am wondering if the person who did the extracts missed
some sheets out but having said that, the name sequences run in correct
order of alphabet.
I can not see Joseph + Elizabeths m for 1771 nor the three children
Lettis/Ann/John (1772-1775) but interestingly, what does show up are the
following christening dates and in each case the parents are listed as:-
Catley......Joseph and Elizabeth
Robert C 25Dec 1777
James C 2Feb 1781
Mary C 6Dec 1782
Joseph C 19Nov 1784
Elizabeth C 7Aug 1789
Obviously there could have been more that one Joseph+Elizabeth Catley in
Royston at this time, however I see a "run" of eight Catley children
covering a 17 year span and I just wonder if they are all one family?
Just a thought
Regards
Timcatt

Hi Liz
Looking for Joseph Catley married Elizabeth Crane 30/9/1771 in Royston.
He is noted on the PR as a sojourner to this parish and his name is spelt
Catle.
3 children
Lettis bapt. 25/12/1775
Ann bapt. 22/3/1772
John bapt. 6/3/1774
Bapt cert all spell his name Catley.
My problem is I do not know where he was born and where to start looking.
Regards
Allan Catley

Hi Sharon
I would appreciate it if you could send me the list. I am still trying to
find a birth record of one of my Sawston Catleys who was married in Royston.
Thank you
Allan Catley

Hi Tim
This is exactly my problem - who is the other Charles? I seem to be going
round in circles! I've had a quick search of FreeBMD just to see what they
might have listed so far, and there is a death of a Charles Cattley Dec Qtr
1859 Royston (no age given), then another Charles Cattley Jun Qtr 1871
Royston age 47 (b.1824)and another Charles Cattley Dec Qtr 1888 Royston age
67 (b.1821). None of them were listed with a single 't' spelling.
I did also contact the Hertfordshire Record Office with a view to purchasing
the Parish Registers on fiche, but they have converted theirs onto microfilm
at a cost of £36 each!!! I think I just might have to give that one a miss
at the moment! I have got a complete list though of everything they hold to
do with the Church of England Parish Registers which I can forward on to
anyone who would like to see it.
Question for Liz - Charles Catley b.1814 who married Arundell b.1811 - what
was her maiden name please? Thanks!
Sharon

Don't worry about it Sharon I make more mistakes than anybody on the List!
I already have microfiche copies of three pages of IGI for Herts and they
have not been that helpful.
Here are all the Charles' shown
Catley Charles Mary Newman H. M. 30Jul1738 Barkway
Catley Charles Charles Catley M. C. 09May1745 Barkway
Catley Charles Newman Catley/Jemima M.C. 10Mar1776 Barkway
Catley Charles Geo Cattley/Elizh M.C. 29Apr1781 Barkway
Catley Charles Hannah Roberts H.M. 20Nov1783 Little Hormead
Catley Charles Mary Wythe H.M. 14Dec1799 Throcking
Catley Charles Geo Catley/Mary Ann M.C. 13Nov1808 Barkway
Catley Charles Joseph Catley/Elizabeth M.C. 25Sep1814 Anstey
Catley Charles James Catley/Sarah M.C. 27Jul1823 Anstey
Catley Charles Samuell Catley/Elizabeth M.C. 18Apr1854 Anstey
H.M.= Husband. Marriage
M.C.= Male. Christening.
I dont think that the discovery of a Charles m Eliz Tolfts does anything to
upset the m details of Charles m Susan Bentley, although there is nothing
for m under Charles in IGI, if you
familysearch.org Susan Bentley it gives m
to Charles as 1849 and that she died in 1864 which rather confirms the work
done by the Vicar of Anstey so I think we have to believe that there was a
Charles Catley m to a Susan Bentley.
To my mind, what does throw everything into confusion is the reality of the
1851 Census which shows two Charles' both aged 28 living next door to
eachother as I explained in my email to Elaine. The guy with Susan as wife
has surely just got to be Charles and Susan nee Bentley. If that is proved
to be the case, then who on earth is (was) the Charles next door at No 65?!
Do you think we will resolve this before May 2008!!!
All best
Timcatt

Hi Tim
You're right - I had a 'funny 5 minutes' when I typed this e mail in!
Blame
it on lack of sleep - I've had an ill child keeping me up for the
past few
nights! Sorry for any confusion, but yes, James (b.1814) was the son of
Edward and Elizabeth nee Fox, as you rightly state.
I'm going to order some of the fiches for the Hertfordshire records to try
to clear some of the queries up. I have searched through everything I have
over the weekend and it has all pointed to James b.1814 dying in 1815.
However, what I am wondering is quite often, if a child dies, another one
is
given the same name and if this James died in the early part of
1815,
perhaps shortly afterwards another James was born in the same year. I
really
need to get hold of the parish records fiches to try to solve some
mysteries! I thought it was a real breakthrough though discovering the
Clavering link.
I am having a real headache with the Charles Catley problem though. Having
discovered the marriage of Charles Catley to Elizabeth Tolfts recently, it
has thrown into disarray the marriages of Charles Catley to Susan Bentley
and Mary Chap(p)el. Like you, I don't think the one Charles married three
times, but I also haven't found a marriage from the earlier Catley
generation of Charles Catley to Sarah (as far as I can tell!).
I will keep on searching though and exploring all avenues to try to solve
this one - I do like a challenge!! I'll keep you updated on everything I
find out.
Thanks for all your help and support though Tim!
Sharon

Hi Sharon/Liz
Like Liz, I have a note here to indicate that Martha was b 1870 Wendon
whereas all the other siblings were b Clavering.
Sharon. I think you may have dropped a generation from what you say. The
James b 1814 who m Hannah aka Ann Chipperfield was the son of Edward b
1781
who m Elizabeth Fox in 1813.
It was James' grandfather who was Edward b 1746 who m Martha Lilly.
The original suggestion that James died in 1815 comes from Candis
Cattley-Sanders who did the first main research on the Anstey Cat*leys so
your information that he founded the Clavering branch and did not die
until
1893 in Saffron Waldon is interesting news indeed.
Candis' work has formed the core of my own data and from what I have
discovered since obtaining it from her in 2003, is that it looks to be
pretty solid with regard to the "main Anstey" pedigree but she has not
looked to expand out from there and there could be errors/omissions on the
perimeters, as it were.
Have any of you resolved "The Charles Catley problem" yet?
