Hi Liz,
I take it you are referring to the Charles Catley who m Elizabeth Tolfts in
1823?
My Herts IGI list shows much the same as Elaine has already indicated on
this, concerning the children of "Charles and Eliza" with all the bapts
occuring in Gt Hormead.
Walter Tolfs Catley born 1st quarter 1849 (not in my IGI copy)
Ann Elizabeth Catley bapt 29/6/1851
Mary Catley bapt 30/10/1853
Thomas Tolfts Catley bapt 24/2/1856
Sarah Catley bapt 28/2/1858
Rebecca Tolfts Catley bapt 29/7/1860.
We seem totally stuck as to where this Charles fits into the Barley/Anstey
tree.
Cheers Tim

Hi Sharon
I dont know if this might help. Charles b abt 1823 Anstey and Eliza had
children up to 1862. There is a death for Elizabeth 1863 Royston and a
death
for Charles aged 47 in 1871 Royston. The death of Charles would fit
in
nicely with Charles DOB.
Charles b abt 1819 Meesden and Susan had children up to Elijah b Jun Q
1864
Royston and her death Jun Q 1864 which tells me she died in child
birth.
Charles remarried Mary Chappel Jun Q 1866
Does this help.
Liz

Hi Tim
You're right - I had a 'funny 5 minutes' when I typed this e mail in!
Blame
it on lack of sleep - I've had an ill child keeping me up for the
past few
nights! Sorry for any confusion, but yes, James (b.1814) was the son of
Edward and Elizabeth nee Fox, as you rightly state.
I'm going to order some of the fiches for the Hertfordshire records to try
to clear some of the queries up. I have searched through everything I have
over the weekend and it has all pointed to James b.1814 dying in 1815.
However, what I am wondering is quite often, if a child dies, another one
is
given the same name and if this James died in the early part of
1815,
perhaps shortly afterwards another James was born in the same year. I
really
need to get hold of the parish records fiches to try to solve some
mysteries! I thought it was a real breakthrough though discovering the
Clavering link.
I am having a real headache with the Charles Catley problem though. Having
discovered the marriage of Charles Catley to Elizabeth Tolfts recently, it
has thrown into disarray the marriages of Charles Catley to Susan Bentley
and Mary Chap(p)el. Like you, I don't think the one Charles married three
times, but I also haven't found a marriage from the earlier Catley
generation of Charles Catley to Sarah (as far as I can tell!).
I will keep on searching though and exploring all avenues to try to solve
this one - I do like a challenge!! I'll keep you updated on everything I
find out.
Thanks for all your help and support though Tim!
Sharon

Hi Sharon/Liz
Like Liz, I have a note here to indicate that Martha was b 1870 Wendon
whereas all the other siblings were b Clavering.
Sharon. I think you may have dropped a generation from what you say. The
James b 1814 who m Hannah aka Ann Chipperfield was the son of Edward b
1781
who m Elizabeth Fox in 1813.
It was James' grandfather who was Edward b 1746 who m Martha Lilly.
The original suggestion that James died in 1815 comes from Candis
Cattley-Sanders who did the first main research on the Anstey Cat*leys so
your information that he founded the Clavering branch and did not die
until
1893 in Saffron Waldon is interesting news indeed.
Candis' work has formed the core of my own data and from what I have
discovered since obtaining it from her in 2003, is that it looks to be
pretty solid with regard to the "main Anstey" pedigree but she has not
looked to expand out from there and there could be errors/omissions on the
perimeters, as it were.
Have any of you resolved "The Charles Catley problem" yet?
