Hello Trevor,
Now that is a possibility, had forgotten about Amos. I think that anyone
who has looked for Cat*leys in either The Public Record Office:
Births/Marriages/Deaths or the International Genealogical Index (The Mormon
Lists) will readily agree that the Catley/Cattley surname was frequently
mispelt and the fact that Amos was a Catley and that the person on this
passenger list was spelt Cattley is not a reason to discount him.
However, the ships mentioned and the routes being taken look to be UK/South
Africa/UK and the ship in question for A.Cattleys passage was The Kildonan
Castle. If my memory serves me rightly, The Union Castle Shipping Line
named all their ships with Castle as the second name, eg Windsor
Castle,Tintagel Castle,Kildonan Castle etc and Union Castle was engaged on
the South Africa run with ships stopping off at places en route Southampton
/ Capetown such as Madeira, Ascension and St Helena.
I do not think there was any shipping connection between Madeira and New
York and even if there was, it seems an odd thing to do, to go via Madeira
and not direct Southampton / New York?
So all in all, Amos could be a contender but I do not think it likely.
Regards
Timcatt

Hello Tim
I wondered if this could be the Amos we corresponded about a couple of
months ago.
He was married to Sophia Pickard and emigrated to the USA in the 1870s
where he became a pastor. You sent me an article about him. He did however
spell his surname with one T.
He originated in Garforth Leeds.
Regards
Trevor Wright
